She broke into song…German song.
During the Oktoberfest celebration at GreenFields of Geneva, Jeanne Sigman, a resident of the senior living community, requested the live entertainment, Keith Stras and Polka Confetti to perform “Du Du Lichts Mer En Herzen (You Are In My Heart).” The German folk song is a well-known and cherished German melody.
Not only did the band oblige her, but they had her hop on stage and join them. A lifelong vocalist, Jeanne was happy to do so.
Jeanne said her ancestors were from Germany, and through the years, “this song was sung, and polkas were danced at family get-togethers and weddings.”
At the GreenFields of Geneva Oktoberfest event, Jeanne said, “Some residents were surprised I stepped up and sang, but my attitude was ‘if not now, when?’ I did it, and I’m glad.” She added, “I did my best to sound German, and a lot of the residents joined in.
The popular event featured the live entertainment along with a German-themed meal with beer and cocktails. “There were many big smiles on the faces of the partygoers,” said Jeanne.
“We have so many fun and engaging programs celebrating various traditions, cultures, histories, and more. It’s often unexpected but very special when our residents are touched in such a heartwarming way,” said Elijah Heyboer, executive director.
